• FORMER Queensland cop Peter Dutton has quit Cabinet to engineer another tilt at becoming prime minister after falling just seven votes short of rolling Malcolm Turnbull in a snap leadership challenge yesterday. Despite winning the Liberal party room ballot 48 votes to 35, Mr Turnbull, PM since 2015, will likely face a second terminal challenge, possibly within weeks.

• MANLY chairman Scott Penn has launched an extraordinary attack on outgoing coach Trent Barrett, accusing him of not acting “in the spirit of the club” and suggesting they had made a mistake in putting their faith in a rookie coach. Penn revealed the search for a replacement was under way, but ruled out former coaches Des Hasler or Geoff Toovey returning.
