Derby knock Southampton out of the FA Cup on penalties after miracle comeback

Frank Lampard’s Derby County have staged a stirring comeback to stun top-flight strugglers Southampton in a penalty shootout and book a spot in the fourth round of the FA Cup.

In a case of deja vu, the Championship club erased Southampton’s advantage for the second time in two weeks to level at 2-2 in their third-round replay before they triumphed 5-3 on penalties.

Southampton appeared to have booked an away tie at third-teir Accrington Stanley when Stuart Armstrong and Nathan Redmond scored within two minutes of each other midway through the second half at a sparsely-populated St Mary’s Stadium.

Derby hit back and they levelled with Harry Wilson and Martyn Waghorn goals taking the game into extra time.

After a scoreless 30 minutes Derby scored all five of their penalties while Redmond put his effort over the crossbar.

Rams captain Richard Keogh’s effort sealed Derby’s progress. Craig Bryson slotted home what he thought was a 38th-minute opener only for referee Anthony Taylor, after a video assistant referee review of several minutes, to rule out the goal because of an offside against Waghorn. Replays showed striker Waghorn, who provided the assist for Bryson, was marginally offside in the build-up.

Lampard admitted his pride at his players after coming through the two legs to once again knock Premier League opposition out of a cup.

“I’m delighted for the team and the squad. The work rate they put in and coming through VAR going against us, it is small margins but it doesn’t matter now...” he told the BBC.

“That takes a lot to come back against Premier League opposition and show the fight and bravery on the ball.

“I thought we were outstanding in the game and some of the first half football was brilliant too.”
